| Bay Scallop (Argopecten irradians) | ||
| Scallops are in the class Bivalva within the phylum Mollusca. All bivalves consist of two symmetrical shells and also include clams, mussels and oysters. The bay scallop is the only bivalve with the ability to move independently. It does this through the contraction of muscles and snapping of shells which propels it through the water in a jerky motion. Another interesting feature of the bay scallop is its blue eyes with which it can sense shapes and movement. |
