Arctic Char (Salvelinus alpinus)
Watercolor and colored pencil
The Arctic char is an ‘anadramous’ fish in the Salmon family, migrating from the sea to fresh water to breed. It inhabits arctic and sub-arctic coastal waters, or alpine lakes, and is found farther north than any other freshwater species of fish. It is in fact the only fish species to exist in some arctic lakes of Ellesmere Island and Canada. It is rare in Britain but is known to dwell in deep, mountain lakes of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Lake District of England. It is more common in other parts of Europe where it is fished more heavily. Arctic char is also known as iqaluk or tariungmiutaq in Inuktitut, one of the native languages of northern Canada, where it has reached record weights of 20+ pounds. It is prized for its flavorful taste and distinctive coloration.
