Arctic Grayling
Media: Procreate on iPad Pro
The unique, iridescent Arctic Grayling (Thymallus arcticus) ranges from Russia to Canada and is the only grayling species that exists in North America. Though conservation efforts are aiding populations, its range has become more limited in some areas, such as Montana, in part due to habitat loss, drought and competition from introduced species. It is listed as a species of special concern in parts of its range and has been on and off the endangered species list. One fascinating feature of this vibrant salmon relative is its distinctive scent of thyme - giving it its name.
