Butterfly Portrait
Watercolor and colored pencil
Produced as part of a commission illustrating the differences between types of insect heads.
Insects are the most diverse group of animals on earth. There are almost a million different known species and almost 20,000 of them are butterflies, inhabiting every continent except Antarctica! They are important pollinators, feeding on the nectar of flowering plants while helping to maintain healthy crops and species diversity in various habitats. Because they are cold-blooded, they live in or migrate to warm climates during the winter. Butterfly migratory patterns are a fascinating chapter in the story of life on earth.
