Circle of Shells (mussels and scallop)

Watercolor and colored pencil

Mussels are in the class Bivalva within the phylum Mollusca. Bivalves have shells divided into two halves and include clams, scallops and oysters. This group of animals has developed a hatchet shaped tissue, or foot, which it buries in the sand and uses as an anchor. From this stable position, these suspension feeders gather small food particles from the surrounding water with the help of small beating hairs or cilia.
