Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)

Watercolor and colored pencil

The beautiful and gentle green sea turtle is one of the largest of the hard shelled marine turtles and is the only species in the genus Chelonia. It can be seen around reefs and in tropical and subtropical waters where it feeds on algae, seagrass and small invertebrates. All species of marine turtles are considered either threatened or endangered due to their sensitivity to a variety of factors, from ingestion of marine debris, to poaching, to the effect of human activity on nesting habitat, as well as climate change. The green sea turtle is on the Red List for Threatened Species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). All marine turtles, except the leatherback, are found in shallow coastal waters which makes them particularly sensitive to these effects.
