Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
This beautiful relative of the salmon is a hugely popular freshwater sport fish, especially for fly- fishing. Native to parts of North America and Asia, it has been introduced to the Test Valley and other regions around the world. This can cause problems for a variety of species and their habitats, but an awareness of issues around species introduction can improve the health of ecosystems. The colourful rainbow trout has a varied diet of insect larvae, small fish and aquatic and terrestrial insects. It is appreciated widely by anglers, naturalists and artists.
