Scup (Stenotomus chrysops)

Watercolor, colored pencil & acrylic

These shimmering little fish are commonly found from the north to mid-Atlantic. Scup, also called Porgy or Scuppaug, can grow as large as 18 inches but average less than one pound. They are often caught just off-shore in spring and summer where they migrate from their deeper winter spawning ground. Scup have been heavily fished in the past, so sustainable management measures and fishing quotas are now in place to protect populations. They feed on various invertebrates such as squid, amphipods, worms and sand dollars. For more information about Scup, visit NOAA Fisheries>>
