Striped Bass (Morone saxitilis)

Watercolor and colored pencil

Striped Bass are a favorite catch in Atlantic waters, as they can grow to over five feet and one hundred pounds. Their striking appearance also make them a popular subject for artists and sculptors. Populations reached drastically low numbers in the early 1980’s due to overfishing and environmental problems, though they are now recovering with the help of fishing regulations. Because they spawn only in fresh water, they are particularly sensitive to pollutants in rivers such as the Hudson in New York, where twenty five percent of the coast’s Bass originate.
