Axolotl

Sometimes known as a “walking fish” this relative of the tiger salamander is actually an amphibian- one that has been wrapped in the myths and legends of Mexico for eons. Axolotls are unusual in that instead of proceeding through metamorphosis and walking on land, they have retained their gills and stay aquatic. More below...

      Axolotl

The axolotl has been wrapped in the myths and legends of Mexico for eons- its name coming from its Aztec root, Xolotl, meaning "water dog". According to legend, this dog-headed soul guide to the underworld was the brother of his feathered twin, Quetzalcoatl and transformed from human to dog form to escape sacrifice.

Due to habitat loss and other threats, there only around 1000 axolotls left in the wild and they are listed as critically endangered on the IUCN list of endangered species.

This axolotl art is available on a variety of products, from fine art prints to everyday essentials, including, cards, journals, mugs, pillows, phone cases, t-shirts & hoodies, cutting boards & other home goods and tech accessories. Bringing a mythic flavour to your home and providing unique gifts for lovers of nature, mythology and symbolism, while supporting the earth with every purchase. Museum quality prints of this mandala art are available framed or unframed in a range of sizes and styles.
