Though this species is not endangered, all bats are protected in Britain for their unique role in ecosystems. They keep insect populations under control, aid in seed dispersal and are also fascinating for their echolocation and nocturnal behaviors. Churches and Cathedrals have become important roosting areas for bats, as many natural habitats have been replaced by human civilizations through the centuries.
