Dover Sole

An interesting aspect of the Sole's biology is its remarkable metamorphosis. As a larva, it has a symmetrical body with an eye on each side, but as it matures, one eye migrates over the top of its head to the other side, and it settles on the seabed, lying on its now eyeless side. This adaptation allows it to lie flat against the ocean floor to ambush prey. The Dover sole is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. While not yet endangered, populations in some areas, particularly the Northeast Atlantic, have experienced significant declines due to overfishing, highlighting the need for sustainable fishing practices to ensure its long-term survival.
