The critically endangered harlequin poison dart frog, endemic to the Choco' region of Columbia, can be found in the leaf litter of its tropical rain forests. Females lay their eggs in small pools of water, often in bromeliads, returning to lay unfertilized eggs which the tadpoles will then feed on until they metamorphose.

Habitat loss, Chytridiomycosis disease and other threats have caused an alarming decline in many amphibian populations as well as the extinction of some species.
