The Indian Cobra, also known as Spectacled, Asian or Binocellate Cobra, is one of the “big 4” snake species that inflict the most bites on humans in India.     The Indian cobra (Naja naja) is a highly venomous snake found throughout the Indian subcontinent. It's known for its distinctive hood, which it expands when threatened. While it's not considered an endangered species, it is protected in India, where it has mythological significance, and its Latin name Naja is Sanskrit for cobra.

    This piece was commissioned for a collection of exemplar species pages during the launch phase of the Encyclopedia of Life (eol.org) whose goal is to provide information about every species on the planet.
