The European Peacock, or Peacock Butterfly, is the only species in the Genus Inachis and ranges from Europe to temperate Asia. The Latin name is derived from Io, daughter of Inachis, of Greek mythology. Its common name comes from the distinctive Peacock-like eye spots on its upper wings, though it often rests with its brown, camouflage undersides exposed, which helps make it invisible to predators.
