Peregrine Falcon

The peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), found around the world, is renowned for its incredible speed, reaching over 200 mph in its characteristic hunting dive, or "stoop." They are powerful birds with long, pointed wings and a dark "moustache" marking below their eyes, preying primarily on medium-sized birds, which they catch in mid-air.

Dedicated conservation efforts brought this fascinating animal back from the brink of extinction after populations in the mid-1900s were nearly wiped out from the effects of the herbicide DDT.
