Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout are visually striking freshwater fish, easily recognized by the vibrant pink or red stripe that runs horizontally along their silvery sides. They typically have a well-proportioned body with dark spots scattered across their back, fins, and sides.  

An interesting aspect of their biology is their remarkable adaptability. While native to western North America, they have been widely introduced around the world and have successfully established populations in diverse aquatic environments, ranging from cold, clear mountain streams to warmer lakes and even brackish estuaries. This adaptability is reflected in the existence of different forms, including stream-resident and anadromous (steelhead) populations that migrate to the ocean to mature before returning to freshwater to spawn. The introduced rainbow trout is a hugely popular sport fish in the Test Valley of the UK, bringing anglers from around the world to enjoy fishing its clear chalk streams.
