Red Admiral Butterfly

The Red Admiral butterfly, with its dark wings and distinctive red bands, is one of the most well known of the European butterflies. Easy to spot during summer months, it is actually a migrant to the British Isles, though there are now small resident populations which overwinter in southern areas where temperatures can sustain them. An adaptable species, it can be found in most habitat types throughout Britain. More below...

    Red Admiral Butterfly

The red admiral is a striking, medium-sized butterfly with predominantly black wings adorned with vibrant red-orange bands and white spots near the tips of its forewings. A fascinating aspect of its biology is its migratory behavior; while it can be found across North America, Europe, and Asia, in many temperate regions, including the UK, it is primarily a migratory species- arriving in the spring and summer from warmer southern areas. With recent temperature changes, increasing numbers are now overwintering in more northerly latitudes, suggesting a potential shift in its life cycle and residency status in some regions. Like many pollinators, habitat loss and pesticide use could pose potential challenges to its populations.
