The scarlet macaw (Ara macao) is a large, vibrant parrot native to the humid evergreen forests of Central and South America, easily recognized by its brilliant red plumage complemented by yellow and blue wing feathers. While the species as a whole is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its wide distribution in South America, some populations, particularly the northern subspecies (Ara macao cyanoptera), are facing threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, leading to localized declines and endangered status in parts of their range. These intelligent birds play a role in their ecosystems as seed predators and can live for many decades in the wild.
