Short-eared Owl

The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a medium-sized owl with mottled brown plumage, a pale underside, and distinctive yellow eyes often ringed with black. Unlike many owls, it often hungs during the day, flying low over open moorlands, grasslands, and saltmarshes- buoyant & moth-like as it searches for voles & other small mammals. In The short-eared owl is a species of European conservation concern due to recent population and range declines. While breeding numbers can fluctuate with vole populations, habitat loss and persecution- particularly on grouse moors- are contributing factors to its status in the UK.
