Red Snapper (Lutjanus campechanus)

Red snapper, also known as huachinango or pargo in Latin America, inhabit the Gulf of Mexico and south-eastern US Atlantic waters, and are a popular commercial and recreational fishing species. They school together in areas near rocky outcroppings, reefs and man-made structures such as oil-drilling platforms, and can be found as deep as 300 feet. They are a long-lived species, often reaching over 50 years of age and 50 pounds. They have been heavily fished over many decades, but recent management measures and fishing quotas have helped to ensure sustainable populations. Find out more from the Ocean Conservancy>>.
