Smooth dogfish, or dusky smooth-hounds, are members of the hound shark family, Triakidae, and were named for their tendency to approach prey in a pack, similar to dogs. They are one of the most abundant species of sharks in their western Atlantic range and are highly mobile, seasonally migrating north to New England in the spring and south to the tropics in the fall. They are nocturnal and feed primarily on crabs, lobsters and other crustaceans, using their flat teeth to grind down the tough shells. These flat teeth and their slender shape distinguish them from other sharks. For more about this species, visit the Virginia Institute of Marine Science>>
