The privet hawk moth (Sphinx ligustri) is one of the UK's largest and most striking moths, easily recognized by its pink and black striped abdomen and hindwings, which are often hidden beneath long, pointed forewings. Its large, bright green caterpillar with distinctive purple and white diagonal stripes and a curved black 'horn' at the rear can be quite conspicuous on its foodplants like privet and honeysuckle. While not under immediate threat in the UK, the spread of ash dieback disease could impact populations due to the loss of a food source.
